The session started, informing us what a sourdough is and how it is different than yeast made dough. She said it was easy. “right” we have heard that before in other instances and it is not always easy. But her way with Sourdough, does make it look easy!

Start with a bit of starter from your last batch of dough, mix it with equal parts water (mixing well) then add equal parts of flour. This will make a product similar in texture to pancake batter. This will sit in a warm space for 6-8 hours. Keep feeding your starter until you have enough to make a batch, on Tuesday this was two loaves of bread. Caroline was well prepared with a two day old batch of sourdough waiting in the refrigerator, and a sourdough starter ready to make into bread. This bread has no sugar and no fat or oils and yet is as tasty as could be.

There were three sessions of stretch and fold and resting. When this is done the batch goes into a refrigerator until cold. It is then baked in a covered dutch oven for approximately 40 minutes. Let rest a bit to cool, cut and enjoy with your favorite jam, jelly or honey straight from the Swan River Farmers Market.

In Benito Karen Shykitka talked with us about wild herbs, we sometimes call weeds. The plants can enhance our health and be made into salves and tinctures. Karen was kind enough to donate some of her products in a door prize draw. Three lucky winners took home sample products. Karen says to listen to your body, if you crave something, maybe it is a vitamin or mineral your body is lacking. When trying new products from the wild or from retail outlets, make sure to tell and ask your medical practitioner for their opinion on this product for your personal health.

Dandelions are good for liver, plantain seeds are good for laxatives, garlic and burdock is good to stimulate blood flow, comfrey is highly useful for external uses – it can help serve as a powerful pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Constable Harmon gave a brief but insightful message about Fraud and sent us home with some phone numbers to call to report scams. It is encouraged to report each scam, it may seem a small thing to us, but by reporting to our local and Provincial contacts, they can assess how big or local the scam is. Money scams can sometimes be intercepted, so call as soon as possible. Never be afraid to tell someone you were a victim of fraud. It may save someone else the chance to be a victim of fraud. Also in attendance from the local RCMP Detachment was Amanda and Constable Erik. We had a short coffee/snack break which gave everyone a chance to chat with the local members.

Laura Rowan works within Prairie Mountain Health as a Community Engagement Liaison with Cancer Navigation Services.
