A thunderstorm that passed through Swan Valley on Thursday, July 6, 2017 produced strong winds that knocked over grain bins and broke off trees. Sadly the most disheartening outcome was the damage to the war memorial in Minitonas.

During the storm, several spruce trees fell on the cenotaph, knocking it over and breaking it into several pieces.
Many individuals from the community and beyond have reached out on facebook to express their heartfelt sympathies over the loss as well as their willingness to support efforts to replace the monument.
The cenotaph, pictured below during a ceremony in 2015, was erected following World War 1 in commemoration of soldiers from the local area killed during military service.
