On October 4th and 5th, 2016, Manitoba Foster Family Network hosted a conference at the Elbert Chartrand Friendship Centre for local foster parents, children in care, local community agencies, such as Child & Family Services, Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Addiction Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) as well as Manitoba Foster Family board members (MFFN).
The two-day event included a Family Fun Night on October 4th, where children in care and foster families enjoyed a meal of roasted pork followed by a talent show presented by peers.
The second day of the conference featured presentations by Manitoba Foster Family Network, the Children’s Advocate as well as Dr. Marilyn Bennett, who authored the ground breaking report, titled, “On the Edge between Two Worlds Community Narratives on the Vulnerability of Marginalized Indigenous Girls”. This article summarizes the key factors impacting indigenous girls within the child welfare system, exposing some of the fundamental issues that function to oppress and endanger female children in care. Foster parents were also given opportunity to participate in a grass roots forum which allowed for discussion of Dr. Marilyn Bennett’s four main recommendations, as outlined in the report.
The Manitoba Foster Family Network would like to express its gratitude to all participating presenters as well as local businesses who thoughtfully contributed door prizes (Adventure Outdoors, Bee Gee’s, Buds and Blossoms, Fit 24/7, Swan Valley Coop & Westwood Inn). Thank you so much for your generous donations.
