Principal Nicole Bobick explained that, in Social Studies, the students have been learning about government structure, global citizenship and the role of government. The older students discussed the provincial ridings and learned that Ron Kostyshyn is the MLA for Swan River. “The students read his bio online and were very interested to learn more about him.” said Principal Bobick. The field trip provided the students with a hands on opportunity to meet Minister Kostyshyn and ask him theri questions in person.

Here is a sample of some of the questions the students asked:

How did you become a politician?
Do you have other interests other than politics?
How is your family involved in politics?
What do you think are some ways we can promote voting to young voters?
How can we make voting more accessible to Aboriginal people or people living in remote areas?
Is it exciting to travel to different places to encourage kids to vote when they get older?

Minister Kostyshyn thanked the school division and teachers for the great idea of having the students visit and for making the trip happen. In closing, he addressed the students and said, “You are the upcoming generation that can make changes and suggestions. I feel very honored that you have chosen to come to visit me.”
