Coffee and a Chat resumed on August 27, 2026 at the Swan River Senior Citizen Centre. It was a pleasure to gather again and hear from Gordon Hornbeck, who shared stories from a life filled with adventure, travel, and creative work. Brenda Gaudry, who is a square dancer, musician, singer with her family based band Midnite Run, entrepreneur, naturalist, artist, crafter, eco-tour operator and educator from Barrows.

Gordon Hornbeck: Life on the Wild Side

Gordon’s presentation highlighted his climbing and canoeing experiences across Western and Northern Canada. He described adventures on glaciers, lakes, and rivers, offering a lively look at the places he has explored and the experiences that shaped his journey.

He also spoke about his work in the film industry. Gordon is known for camera and electrical department credits on The Wake (1986), which was set in Alberta, and for cinematography work on Alberta Bound (1984), set in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Brenda Gaudry: Wild Teas, Healing Plants, and the Boreal Forest

Brenda Gaudry, a multi-talented entrepreneur, shared stories about her wildlife experiences and her interest in picking wild teas. Her presentation encouraged participants to see nature as a source of learning, wellness, and discovery.

Brenda explained that many plants found in nature can support healing and well-being when people know where to look, how to identify them, and how to use them safely. She encouraged everyone to “open our eyes” to the plants and resources around us. She also spoke about her first video, Open Our Eyes, in which she explores the boreal forest in search of useful plants. The topic offered a thoughtful reminder of the knowledge and possibilities found close to home.

We had a chance to sample Barrows made maple syrup, wild mint and wild hyssop tea. The hyssop tea tastes remarkably like licorice.

Coffee and a Chat will resume in Birch River, Benito, and Swan River on September 22, 23, 24th. The sessions will feature Terry Fullerton with the Canadian Rangers, mini trade shows, and Benito and Swan River will host Jennifer Lavoilette from the Star and Times, who will be looking for stories about Christmas traditions.
