Northwest Region
An intense weather event moved in the Northwest Region to start the week. Rain began Monday and continued into Tuesday bringing significant amounts across the entire region. The large amounts across the region overwhelmed ditches/drains and rivers very quickly, causing significant overland flooding and damage to infrastructure. In addition to the entire Northwest region receiving damage, the Swan Valley area was affected for a second time. Water levels have since receded; however many fields are still affected by overland flooding and damage continues to be assessed.

Infrastructure damage was significant in this storm, with all previous repairs in the Swan Valley region washed away again. Much more additional damage was received across the entire region, making commuting impossible, as well as accessing fields.

Although some fields received timely herbicide applications, there are many fields that have missed the application window due to unfavourable conditions, including wet fields, rain and high winds.

Fall rye and winter wheat are headed out and continue towards flowering stage.

Field peas continue in the vegetative stage and most advanced are now into the R1 stage. Areas that have been continuously wet are showing signs of excess moisture.

Crop stages continue to range in spring cereals, from tillering to flag leaf stage. Once again, areas under continuous excess moisture are showing symptoms of stress.

Canola fields also range in stages, from 4 leaf to the earliest fields now in early flower. While some crops look healthy, some fields under excess moisture are thin and starting to stress bolt. Herbicide applications may be challenging due to excess moisture.

Soybean fields range from the second to fourth trifoliate stage and some fields are showing signs of IDC.

Weather Report
Variable precipitation occurred over the past 7 days across agro-Manitoba. Once again, rains and isolated thunderstorms brought hail, strong winds, intense rain, and possible tornadoes swept through the majority of the province. The largest accumulations occurred in the Southwest near
Boissevain and Souris, as well as the Northwest region in the already water-logged areas of San Clara, Ethelbert, Dauphin, Minnedosa, and
Russell. Overland flooding and overflowing rivers and streams have caused many communities, including the City of Brandon, to declare local
states of emergency. Weekly accumulations ranged from 9 (Sprague) to 188 mm (Boissevain). A tornado was confirmed in the Whyte Ridge
neighborhood of Winnipeg on June 29.

Climate normals for total accumulated precipitation from May 1 to July 5 range from 131 mm to 211 mm (Table 2) and are based on 30-year
historical data. Since May 1, areas of the Northwest and Interlake regions have accumulated 220 mm of precipitation. Frequent precipitation events have brought seasonal accumulations well above normal for the entire Northwest and Interlake regions. Areas of the Central and Southwest
region also have above-normal accumulations due to recent rainfall. Areas of the Northwest have accumulated more than 200% of normal
precipitation. A few localized areas of the Central, and Eastern regions have seen accumulations under 80% of the 30-year average.

Total Accumulation of Growing Degree Days shows the accumulated growing degree days (GDD) for the period of May 1 – July 5, 2026. GDD
accumulations ranged between 497 and 731 GDD so far this growing season. Most of Southern Manitoba has accumulated more than 600 GDD.
