Great Afternoon at Old Fashioned Country School Picnic

Submitted by Debbie Soloway.

Welcome to Renwer, a quaint little town with four street lights and a population of under a dozen. Here you will find one of the last still standing old one room country schools called Fisher’s Siding. Brian Lewicki owns the property and gets the yard site prepped for the picnic day, thanks to him and his sister Gloria for all their work.

Once a year, a few people work together to put on their annual old-fashioned country school picnic, and this year it took place on July 20, 2025. This year it was a day of rain showers, but that didn’t stop anyone since my pre-planning had Cliff and Orville attach tarps to the wall of the school and stretched out over all the guests.

There were 34 guests all gathered around sitting on lawn chairs visiting, telling jokes, sharing their stories from the past, looking at photo albums and reminiscing. A few new guests travelled quite far including, Dan Nemez from Calgary, AB, Peter Bernacki and partner Melinda from Revelstoke, BC and Marguerita Ogilvie from Lac du Bonnet, MB.

Between showers there was time to play a few games, including the straw hat relay race, the holy bucket water race, and the water balloon toss. If you hadn’t got wet from the rain showers, then there was a good chance these participants were going to be wet.

The day concluded with a delicious potluck supper including an assortment of salads and scrumptious desserts. The extra special foods on the table were fresh potatoes in cream, fresh cucumber salad, and fresh potato buns, first rate cuisine.

Congratulations to Gloria Lewicki the 50/50 winner and to Betty MacCumber on winning the donated hoodie from Peter. Thank you to all the guests for coming and bringing their smiles and potluck delights. We look forward to seeing you all again next year in our little town of Renwer. Have a fabulous summer.
