Prairie Mountain Health Media Release |
Prairie Mountain Health (PMH) is partnering with the Swan Valley Medical Professional Recruitment and Retention Committee (SVMPRRC) to host an additional medical student rural interest group (RIG) workshop in Swan River February 7-9, 2024. The weekend event will feature 19 first and second-year medical students from the University of Manitoba’s Max Rady College of Medicine who will explore the benefits of career and lifestyle opportunities in the Swan River Valley. It comes on the heels of a very successful RIG workshop event held late last month within the communities of Brandon and Killarney, where PMH hosted a record-breaking 75 students between the two rural centres.
PMH Chief Medical Officer Dr. Adrian Fung, who worked in Swan River for nearly six years, remembers touring the community for the first time. He says students will enjoy their experience. “We’re very excited that with the organizational and financial support from the SVMPRCC, we are able to extend the workshop to Swan River. PMH and Health Care Careers Manitoba also sincerely appreciate the support of the U of M, regional physicians, staff and community volunteers who help make the RIG weekend possible and a success.”
Student RIG Co-Presidents Regina Klassen and Caitlin Culleton say participants are really looking forward to the event. The Rural Interest Group and the University of Manitoba Medical Classes of 2027 and 2028 are honoured to join the Swan River community for a weekend of clinical skills and festivities. We are grateful to PMH and Swan River for providing us with this opportunity, as this is the northern-most trip we will offer this year, giving students invaluable insight into what it means to live and work rurally.”
