On Remembrance Day, we gather together, we wear poppies, we march, we lay wreaths, we listen to the last post and we grow silent to remember those who gave their lives in service to country.
On November 11, 2024 members of the community gathered at the Veterans Community Hall in Swan River for the observance of Remembrance Day.
Woven throughout the Remembrance Day Message given by Pastor Bob Lewis, Chaplain for the Royal Canadian Legion – Swan River Branch, were the first names of the people featured on the Remembrance Day banners displayed on main street. “Those soldiers are from Swan Valley, from our community, from our home and yes, they all were killed in action in WWI and WWII,” said Pastor Lewis.
“The purpose, of course is to remember those men, and women and boys who gave their lives that we may have freedom from tyranny, undemocratic rule. Those banners, we hope, help us to remember,” he explained, “Lest We Forget.”
Taking the time to truly see the banners, the faces, the ages, of those killed in action is a somber experience. Many of these soldiers were no older than the young graduates who’s pictures previously lined the streets. Their whole life ahead of them. Seeing these banners helps us to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, to honour our veterans and to be thankful for those who continue to serve today.
“There is a fragileness to remembering,” said Pastor Lewis. “It is easy to forget. It takes a community to remember – Lest We Forget.”
