Minitonas 4H Beef Club Hosts 68th Annual Beef Show

Saturday May 28, 2022 the Minitonas 4H Beef club hosted the 68th Annual 4H Beef Show. The grounds at the Swan River Ag grounds were buzzing with activity as soon as the sun was up. The members were bathing, grooming and practicing for the big day.

The day started with a group picture, the singing of O’Canada and the 4H Motto.

Our Judge for the day was Brennen Jack from Heartland Livestock in Virden MB, Robyn Tibble was the ring Stewart and Savanah Hillmer was our announcer. A big Thank You to Wendy Black for getting the all the prizes and keeping them all organized in the announcer booth.

The 1st class of the day was the 1st year showmanship, this class is open to any member that has never shown before. With 2 years of cancelled shows, we had 9 members that entered this class. It is a great class to shake off the nerves and get their feet wet, literally! All exhibitors received a show cap from 734 Inc.

The next class was the calf class. This is for calves born in 2022. Wenzel Farms sponsored this class. Raelynn Graham was the winner she received a show cane, a brush and a Rosette Ribbon from SVCU. Second place was Colton Hillmer, he received a Show cane and 3rd place was Bennett Dagg who received a brush, 4th was Jessa Kushniryk, 5th Leah Graham and 6th was Kyra Kushniryk.

The Heifer – Junior Female Champion is Kae-lyn Dagg, she received a Jacket sponsored by Soura-Horan Farms and a Rosette from SVCU. Reserve Junior Champion Female was awarded to Colton Hillmer, he received a Plaque from Crop Productions and a Rosette from SVCU.

The next class was the Continuation Female class, this is female cows born in 2020 with a 2022 calf at side, this cow must have been shown as a 4-H heifer project in previous year. Leah Graham was awarded the Senior Champion Female; she won a Jacket sponsored by Swan Valley Veterinary Clinic and a Rosette from SVCU. The reserve Senior champion female went to Raelyn Graham, she received a plaque sponsored by RanHart Farms & a Rosette from SVCU.

The champion and reserve champion from each of the female class then advanced to the Grand Champion Class. Kae-lyn’s Heifer project won the Grand Champion Female, Anderson Cattle Company sponsored a Banner and Rough Country Kubota a Jacket to the winner. The Reserve Grand Champion was won by Raelyn Grahams Mature cow. Raelyn was awarded a banner sponsored by the Fulford Family.

Following the female classes, the members the participated in the Judging competition. 4 steers were brought into the ring, and the kids were given the task of placing them 1st to 4th and write their reasons. The members were given a few pointers by alumni members Robyn & Savanah. The Cloverbuds and Junior members were assisted by the Judge. Brennin made sure the young ones all did a great job!

The Steer show started at 1pm sharp with the lightweight steers 1st. Nate Immerkar was the Champion Lightweight Steer, John & Dianne Kichuk sponsored the Jacket that was awarded. Jenaya Nunn was the reserve Champion Light Weight Steer. Swan Wood Shavings sponsored a plaque. Both were awarded Rosettes from SVCU. 3rd place was Ava Keller, 4th Leah Graham, 5th Colton Hillmer and 6th was Hayden Hulme.

The Heavyweight Steers were next in the ring. Jack Mullin won the Champion Heavyweight steer, wining a Jacket sponsored by Spruce Products ltd, and a Rosette from SVCU. Kylan Nunn was the Reserve champion heavyweight steer; he was awarded a plaque from Ok tire and Auto Service and a Rosette from SVCU. 3rd place was Dax Mullin, Everett Griffith was 4th, Jillian Hrycyk 5th and Grace Keller was 6th.

Like the Female class, the Champion and reserve champion from both classes come back in for Grand Champion Steer Class. The Judge slapped Jack Mullin steer as the Grand Champion. Jack received the Bank of Montreal Trophy, a Jacket from Rough County Kubota and a banner sponsored by SVCU. The Reserve Grand Champion was Kylan Nunn, he received a banner from Brent Young Seeds/Riverside Seeds & Sales.

Senior Showmanship entered the ring, the class was large and very competitive. 11 started the class, Judge Brennin then asked them to move to the steer beside them. They were then judge on their ability to show another member’s animal. Then 5 were excused from the class and the 6 left had to move once again and give up their show sticks. The class was very interesting to watch. When it was all said and done Leah Graham was the class winner, she was awarded a plaque and a brush sponsored by PKHC Chartered Accountants and a pair of gloves from Heartland Livestock in Virden. Colton Hillmer was 2nd, he also received a pair of gloves courtesy of Heartland Livestock. Nate Immerkar 3rd, 4th was Jill Hrycyk, 5th Jack Mullin and 6th was Kyra Kushniryk they all received ribbons from SVCU. Kylan Nunn won the best-groomed animal sponsored by Richardson Pioneer.

Intermediate Showmanship was a little smaller of a class but just as competitive. Raelyn Graham stole the show winning the class and the best groomed. she was awarded a plaque and a brush sponsored by PKHC Chartered Accountants and a pair of gloves from Heartland Livestock in Virden, and a plaque from Richardson Pioneer. Dax Mullin was 2nd he received a pair of gloves from Heartland Livestock. 3rd was Ryder Kushniryk, 4th Everett Griffith, 5th Danica Hrycyk and 6th Grace Keller.

Junior Showmanship was Hayden Hulme 1st, he was awarded a trophy and a brush sponsored by PKHC Chartered Accountants and a pair of gloves from Heartland Livestock in Virden, Jenaya Nunn 2nd she won a pair of gloves from Heartland Livestock and Kae-lyn Dagg was 3rd. Jenaya also won the best-groomed animal sponsored by Richardson Pioneer.

The Cloverbuds class was won by Aberi Hulme, she won a trophy and a brush sponsored by PKHC Chartered Accountants and a pair of gloves from Heartland Livestock in Virden, Jessa Kushniryk was 2nd and received a set of gloves from Heartland livestock, Bennett Dagg was 3rd.

Jessa won the best-groomed animal sponsored by Richardson Pioneer.

The kids then paired up by family to enter the Best Pair of Animals sponsored by Swan Valley Consumers Coop, the Champion pair received a trophy and gift certificates – The Keller girls, Ava and Grace were the Champion Pair, Reserve Champions were the Dagg’s, Kira and Kae-lyn they received gift cards from the Coop.

The last class of the day was the Group of Three, sponsored by Cook & Cooke Insurance. Colton Hillmer, Nate Immerkar and Ryder Kushniryk were the winners of the lawn chairs.

Judge Brennin Jack called upon all parents and alumni to compete in an impromptu showmanship class. There were lots of laughs and some great efforts made.
