At this time, new members are welcomed into our midst, new music is handed out, and returning members greet old friends. We are always happy to see each other again, anticipating another great year. Each practice throughout the year has fun, humour, and camaraderie.
It is a time for regrouping, assessing who we have lost to job transfers or life changes. This is the one time we suffer sadness. We never like to lose anyone for whatever reason!
Our numbers stay a steady 28 to 32 musicians. And, this year we have a possible 5 new ones, with only one loss. And, the plus from the new influx is returning past members. There is an extra benefit because of this, as our Brass Quintet, TARNISHED BRASS, will be able to continue after our Tuba player transferred to another town. (He didn’t feel he could commute 3 ½ hours, even though we were begging him.)
Our group is blessed with 7 Directors who are employed, or have been employed, with the Swan Valley School Division. They graciously take a turn directing which is a great learning experience for our Band. Every Director has their own style which challenges every musician into growth with their music, and one cannot experience complacency as a result. This also challenges non-director members to try the job as well. We have had few pick up the baton in the past, including a few SVRSS Band Students, who were members, and continued on to be Band Directors. They got their start with us.
Lack of previous musical and/or instrumental training shouldn’t be a deterrent to joining us. We have members who didn’t play before they joined us, now they do. Nor, should a hiatus from playing a musical instrument prevent anyone from joining us. It is like riding a bike, it all comes back to you. We anticipate you joining us! At $45.00/year, and at least 2 Concerts, where else can you be entertained for so little. Family & Student rates are available as well.
Julie Kooistra founded this Community Band and has been the Director from its inception.
Our Christmas Concert has been set for Wednesday, 7 December 2016. Mark your calendars!
