A Guiding Good Choices parent workshop concluded on March 21, 2016. In this program, parents and caregivers learned how to strengthen family bonds, set a clear family position on drugs, teach children skills they need to make healthy choices and increase children’s involvement in the family.
Participation in this parenting program is free of charge, thanks to Swan Valley Communities That Care. Each evening families met prior to the session for a meal. This was an excellent opportunity for the parents and kids to socialize with other families.
While parents were in the sessions, supervised child care was available. A couple members of the Swan Valley Stampeders and three community members graciously donated their time over the course of the 5 weeks to assist with activities in the gym. The kids had a great time every evening!
During session 3, youth ages 9-14 participated in the session with their parents or caregivers. In this session, the families practiced refusal skills. It was a great experience for the youth to learn how to identify trouble and how to use refusal skills in these pressured situations.
SVCTC would like to thank the volunteers who continue to assist with these programs! Plans are underway to host another workshop in Bowsman in April. This is an excellent program for ALL parents or caregivers. If you have any questions, please contact Jen Patterson at svctcprograms@gmail.com or at (204) 281-4561.
