The late Ken Schenk, former Fire Chief of the Benito Fire Department, had a dream. He envisioned that someday the Benito Fire Department would have a Rapid Response unit in the fleet.

Donations and fundraising events have been ongoing for the last four years. There have been Pancake breakfasts and steak suppers as well as donations that have come in from generous people from the Village of Benito and the R.M. of Swan River and beyond. Memorial donations in memory of Ken Schenk, Jean Baker and Les Rice have come in from all over Manitoba and Saskatchewan and all the funds have been added to the special Rapid Response Fund at the Village of Benito.
Earlier this year the Benito Fire Department approached the Village of Benito and the R.M. of Swan River to present a proposal for a unit that they found for sale from another Fire Department and to ask for additional funds to make the purchase. Both municipalities responded and added funds sufficient to make the purchase and on Monday July 14, 2014, as a result of a lot of hard work of a lot of people, Ken’s dream became a reality with the arrival of this Rapid Response Vehicle.
Congratulations to each and every person who donated so generously over the last few years and to the Benito Firemen who worked so hard to make this happen. May we all always remember that this all started with the dream of one of our finest, Fire Chief Ken Schenk.
