RCMP Investigate False 911 Call

Swan River RCMP Report |

On June 27, 2013 at about 4:30 pm a 911 call originated from a pay phone on the 200 block of 2 Ave, in Minitonas, MB with the complaint of a structure fire in the area. Minitonas Fire Dept and Swan River RCMP attended. Investigation reveals this to be a false complaint.

Swan River RCMP has dealt with Fifty-four (54) ‘911’ system calls for service within the last 6 months, alone. These are separate from the ‘911’ calls that result in Criminal or other statutory investigations. These calls ranged from bonafide requests for assistance, to 911 hang ups, 911 dead lines, kids playing with the telephone, intoxicated persons mis-dialing, outright false complaints, to simply an abuse of the 911 system where there was no emergencies, nor a bonafide police complaint.

Swan River RCMP encourages the public to use the 911 system in a responsible manner. When the 911 system is misused, emergency resources become unavailable for other legitimate emergencies, where ultimately public safety is jeopardized.
