Nancy McLennan is one of the many Volunteers for the Manitoba Games that start Sunday, here in The Valley. Today, she donned her Volunteer uniform for her shifts at Wellman Lake where the sailing begins on Monday, July 16, 2012.

“I’ve been at Wellman since 1988,” said McLennan who is an avid board sailor. “I learned to sail my board shortly after we got our cabin, and then, somehow, I was entered in the Manitoba Games, regionals, for sailing,” she remembered. That regatta was also held at Wellman Lake.
“It was terrible weather for the event so there were not very many entries, but I went for it.” She laughed. “I got a silver medal, but there might have been only two competitors. I finished the race though.”
McLennan’s job for the games this week will be record keeping at the beach.
“Things have changed, since I was in the Manitoba Games. This is a youth-centred regatta.”
The Sailing event features two classes of boats:
The Pram
(with a boys division and a girls division for sailors 10 to 14 years) and
The Laser
(also with two divisions but sailors aged 15-17).
At the time of writing, McLennan did not know how many entries there would be.
“We are setting up at Betcher’s beach (east of the Main Beach) so there will be room on the Main Beach and dock for great viewing if you bring binoculars,” she said. “These kids are gearing up for the Canada Games, and who know, if they stick with it they could get with Sail Canada someday and make it to the Olympics! It’s all about sport development.”
McLennan said during her shifts will not only be sporting her Manitoba Summer Games uniform and Accreditation but she will also wear her Manitoba Games silver medal, from back in the day, won right here at Wellman Lake.
