Northern/Remote Physician Return-of-Service in Swan River

PRHA Media Release |

Northern & Remote Family Medicine Residency Stream

Through some dedicated work of our VP-Medical Services, Dr. Cary Chapnick, the PRHA has received notification from the Strategic Council of the Northern and Remote Family Medicine Residency Stream that two communities within our Region have been approved as return-of-service agreement sites for the Northern/Remote Stream of the University of Manitoba, Department of Family Medicine. This allows the Region to recruit physicians who have completed their northern/remote residencies to Swan River and Winnipegosis.

Under the program, residents receive a financial grant from the Province of Manitoba during their training and in return, enter into a two-year return of service agreement, to be fulfilled in one of the approved northern and remote communities. The PRHA is communicating with potential candidates who are interested in practicing in one of these two communities.

The Northern and Remote Family Medicine Residency Stream began in 2008. This year, 15 physicians are completing the two-year residency, with a majority of them graduating at the end of June. There are 15 additional residents enrolled within the program who will be completing their training in 2013. For more information on the program, log on to the U. of M. Department of Family Medicine website and click on the post-graduate training link.
