Lorie Vessey New Cancer Patient Navigator

PRHA Media Release |
Cancer Patient Navigation services are now available in Parkland. With the completion of Brandon Westman Cancer Centre in 2011, the Parkland, Assiniboine, Brandon RHAs, and CancerCare Manitoba, identified the need to improve the rural patient cancer journey.

The program will improve patient access to services, efficiency of care, and to provide compassionate care in action. The Tri-Regional Program initiated services with the hiring of a nurse patient navigator in each region. In Parkland, the first Cancer Patient Navigator is Lorie Vessey.

Lorie has been touring the Region and providing information to staff and physician groups regarding the CancerCare Navigator Program. Additional information will be provided to other health partners and stakeholder groups as the program becomes more established.

It’s important to note that patients and family members can be referred to the nurse navigators at any point of their cancer experience. These experiences may include diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, survivorship, end of life palliative care and bereavement.

The program focuses on patient and family services and provides informational, emotional, practical support, and guidance to those in need.

The Cancer Patient Navigator will work closely with patients and their families, the family physician, the CancerCare Manitoba team, the Community Cancer Network and community resources to ensure the best possible care closer to home.
