Swan Valley Rec & Wellness Centre: Update April 27, 2011

Swan Valley Recreation and Wellness Centre Media Release | Support for the Swan Valley Recreation and Wellness Centre is growing and the project has seen significant progress since the Public Meeting on March 21, 2011:

– Approximately $73,000 has been pledged through the 2740 Club.

– As part of the site preparation, the 2 houses on the building site are in the process of being dismantled and removed in accordance with LEED guidelines.

– Participating municipalities are working on finalizing formulas for funding the projected operating deficit through property taxes.  Surveys from the public meeting indicated over 90% of those who responded were “Agreeable to paying a portion of this project on property taxes based on numbers presented” at the public meeting.

Overall the survey responses were very positive and one message came out loud and strong:

Build it Now!  Build it All!

Survey comments included concerns that waiting to build portions of the facility may subject the project to an increase in construction costs and would have residents waiting for certain features.  To complete the entire project as a one phase project, funding will need to be in place sooner.

The project has received unprecedented government funding in the amount of $4.8 million with potentially an additional $2 million towards Phase 2.  The Fund Raising committee is in the process of securing donations toward the $1.3 million corporate fund raising goal from several large corporations.

Individuals can show their commitment to this project by stepping up with a financial contribution.  For $1 a day individuals can join the 2740 Club.  The $1 million individual fund raising goal will be met once 2740 members join.  The sooner fund raising goals are met the sooner the entire facility can be built. Pledge forms are available at:

The Swan Valley Recreation and Wellness Centre also looks forward to releasing answers to more of the specific questions from the surveys.
