Friends Gather at Old Fashioned Renwer Picnic

Respectfully submitted by Debbie Soloway

This year the Renwer Fisher’s Siding Picnic took place July 21, 2024 during a very hot spell. But if you know anything about Renwer I’m sure you would say it’s always windy there! Sunday was no different and we were blessed with a wonderful breeze. This allowed us to enjoy visiting, playing water games and eating the delicious potluck supper outside in the shade of the old one room school.

This year we had fewer guests than usual, some due to other commitments, health conditions and the heat. It only seemed fitting to have water incorporated into the games and not exert ourselves. Therefore participants got a little wet while playing the water balloon toss and carrying water to the bucket with a can with holes in it.

It was great to see both participants and spectators having lots of laughs. It was great to see life long friends and greet new comers to the old fashioned picnic.

As the Canadian flag was going up the flag pole one of the schools former teachers was being escorted to the school yard.

How great it was to see teacher Leith Bell, and Nick Lapsiuk, both great supporters of the event as they look forward to it taking place every year.

The potluck supper offered many choices of meats, salads, vegetables, even fresh garden potatoes and desserts, totally scrumptious. Congratulations to Diane Tokar on winning the 50/50 draw, and a huge thank you to Diane for donating half of her winnings back to the school event.

We want to thank everyone for all your help, participation and support. Big thank you to Brian Lewicki for the use of the land and school, mowing the grass, bringing the biffy and other supplies; and for hiring the school cleaner Reta Jones. Thank you Reta. We appreciate everyone who comes to make new memories and share their stories of Renwer and the past. Until we meet again next year, take care and enjoy your summer.
