Board Meeting

1. The board met with Sapotaweyak Chief Nelson Genaille and Education Director Margaret Leask to discuss the SVSD and SCN partnership with our high school and adult students. The discussion centered on the existing programs that we have developed together and some of the future needs of the SCN community. The board thanked Chief Genaille and Margaret for their leadership, their vision, and the trust that they have placed on our educational system. The board looks forward to future possibilities as we continue to work with SCN.

2. Principal Jocelyn Bender gave a presentation on Benito School. She outlined all the initiatives that have addressed the learning outcomes for their students. She summarized the many challenges that the staff and students face within their learning community. The data that was provided helped the board understand the complexity of the job of teaching our young people. The board was pleased with the dedication of the administration, teachers, and support staff in Benito School.

3. The Teacher Idea Fund project concerning Co-Regulation rooms that has been submitted was reviewed. Modifications to existing projects that have been approved were highlighted.

4. Staffing changes and additions were reviewed. The board acknowledged the well-trained young people returning to the SVSD to begin their careers.

5. NITT has done some initial planning with Brandon University to try to establish the PENT teacher training program in Swan River. The board was briefed on a meeting with Debra Mayer who is an Early Childhood Consultant with the Department of Education. The Department is writing Curriculum that would create an Early Childhood Course Cluster that would give High School Students advanced placement into the ECEII program. A start date of Sept 2023 is the Department’s target.

6. Brad Klekta, Transportation Supervisor, presented the Bus Replacement proposal. The board approved the purchase of three new buses.

7. The SVSD Board will meet on March 21st to finalize the budget.
