Spitfires Volleyball Club Hosts Fall Volleyball Camp

Submitted by: Kandace Hart

The Spitfires Volleyball Club was excited to host former Olympic Women’s Volleyball Coach Mike Burchuk this weekend at the Birch River School Gym for a Fall Volleyball Camp for high school age girls.

There were 11 Junior Varsity (grades 9 & 10) and 10 Varsity (grades 11 & 12) players who attended the sessions. The fall camp had a specific focus on technique. Mike used pictures, stories and humor to illustrate good and bad form for passing, setting, hitting and blocking skills. There was a marked improvement in the players form the first session to the 3rd session.

Mike was very conscientious in regard to planning drills that would allow the players to learn techniques and practice skills while keeping social distancing in mind. He wore a mask for the duration of the clinic except for a picture with the Varsity Group at the end.

The Spitfires Volleyball Club hopes to be able to bring in other coaches to keep the players skills fresh and give them an opportunity to exercise physically and mentally as we are able. It was really nice to see the girls working together.

Our club season is scheduled to begin in January 2021. We are hoping to keep our open practices going until December when we can select our team an hopefully start competing.

Thank you to all the players who came out to make this weekend happen!
