MJHL Finals – Game 1 Recap: 3-0 Win for Portage

Despite outshooting their opponent, the Stamps’ fell to the Portage Terriers 3-0 in Game 1 held April 5, 2019 in Portage.

The highly anticipated game one of the Turnbull Cup Championship series started slowly for the Stampeders. The Terriers pushed the majority of the play in the opening frame but were outshot by Swan Valley. Joey Moffatt would score the series’s first goal, letting a shot go from the top of the circle that beat Merek Pipes on the power play at 7:06 of the first. The Stampeders sent 15 shots on net in the opening frame but couldn’t solve Ethan Peterson.

Scoring would resume in the third period as Ty Barnstable was left all alone in front of the goal, beating Merek Pipes at the 11:05 mark. Chase Brakel would score into an empty net eight minutes later and the Portage Terriers would skate to a 3-0 win in game one of the best of seven series.

Final shots on goal were 34-31 for Swan Valley.
