4H Beef Show and Sale Returns to Ag Grounds

The Swan Valley 4H Beef Show & Sale was held on May 27th at the Swan Valley Agriculture Grounds. This is the 1st show there since 1979, and it was an overwhelming success. We have members from 6 – 21 years old.

There were close to 50 animals at the grounds on Saturday, they were being bathed, groomed, clip and shinned up for the crowd that gathered shortly after 10am.

The Show started with the First Year Showmanship, this is open to all exhibitors showing their 1st year project. 5 members were in this class and all received a ribbon and a chow cap courtesy of Parkland Embroidery.

The Cloverbuds then took the show ring with Carly Barker winning the Showmanship class sponsored by Cargill Grain Company. Taylor Finlay won the Best Groomed Cloverbud sponsored by CPS.

The Calf Class was the next class, and there was a large number of participants in this class, 7 young frisky calves were shown! The winner was Martina Tibble who received a Show Cane, 2nd place was Savannah Hilmer awarded a Halter both awards were sponsored by Wenzel Farms

The Heifer Competition (Females born between Jan 1st & July 1st 2016)
was next with 12 entries.

The Junior Campion Female was awarded to Colton Hilmer, he was awarded a Jacket from Richardson Pioneer.

Reserve Junior Campion Female went to Martina Tibble who was awarded a Plaque from L&I Depot.


Continuation Female Class (Females born in 2015 with a 2017 calf at side) had 7 entries. The Senior Female Champion was awarded to Martina Tibble, receiving a jacket from SV Vet Clinic, Reserve Senior Female Champion winner was Savannah Hilmer receiving a plaque from Heartland Livestock Services.

The Mature Female class ( Mature Females that were previous 4H projects with 2017 calf at side) this is a new class for our club, Leah Graham was the only entry this year and we look forward to more entries in the years to come. Leah was awarded a Jacket sponsored by John & Dianne Kichuk.

The Grand Champion Female (Heifers, Continuation & Mature Females) was the last animal class of the morning. The Grand Champion Female was Colton Hilmer with his Heifer, he was awarded a Banner from Anderson Cattle Company and a Jacket from Rough Country Kubota. Reserve Grand Champion was awarded to Martina Tibble and her Continuation Female, a banner from Fulford Farms was awarded to her.


Before we broke for the Lunch, 4 dads got to strut their stuff and show off their skill in setting up and showing a steer. The kids then judged each animal in a judging competition. Our Judge Riley Lafrentz from Benfait SK was the assigned the task of marking 35 judging cards!

The results were Cloverbud – Taylor Finlay, Junior – Colton Hilmer, Intermediate – Savannah Hilmer, Senior – Lilei Nichiporuck.

Doaks Bulk Fuel awarded each of these winners with Portfolios. We broke from lunch and headed over to the Kinsmen booth, who were serving up 4H beef burgers, fries and drinks!

The Showmanship classes were next, Senior Showmanship (15 yrs. & older) Martina Tibble was 1st, Robyn Tibble second & Lane Martin 3rd. The Best groomed was judged at the same time and Lane Martin was the Winner in that class

Intermediate Showmanship was won by Savannah Hilmer, 2nd was Joe Slepicka, and Laredo Martin was 3rd. Laredo Martin was awarded the Best Groomed animal Jr Showmanship was a large class, 1st was Meghan Slepicka, 2nd Nate Immerkar, 3rd Parker Tibble, and 4th Liam Dodd. Parker Tibble won the Best Groomed Animal.

The Steer show started with the light weight class, this was split in to two classes with 7 in each class and then the top 2 from each class brought for a championship light weight class. Champion Light Weight Steer was Parker Tibble with his steer Trump who received a jacket from Swan Hills Ranch. Reserve light weight steer was Lane Martin and Sergio, they were awarded a plaque from Swan Wood Shavings Inc.

The heavy weights followed with the top 4 out of the two splits, Champion Heavy Weight was Liam McArthur and Steve they were awarded a Jacket from Spruce Products. Reserve Champion Heavy Weight was Nate Immerkar and Buck receiving a plaque from Ok Tire & Auto Service.

These 4 winners came back in the ring to compete for the Grand Champion Steer. The winner is awarded a Banner to hang in the barn, Bank of Montreal Trophy (with 61 past winners on it) and a Jacket from Rough Country Kubota. Parker Tibble and Trump proudly accepted the trophy. Reserve Grand Champion steer was Liam McArthur and Steve, who received a banner from Brett Young seeds.

Group of Three sponsored by Cook & Cooke insurance was won by Callie Immerkar, Nate Immerkar and Carnell Grandfield.

Best Pair of Animals (exhibited by one family) was sponsored by Swan Valley Consumers Coop.

Champion Pair was Savannah & Colton Hilmer, Reserve Champion Pair went to Callie & Nate Immerkar.

The Groomsman Award was awarded to Savannah Hilmer.

The Minitonas 4H beef club would like to thank all the buyers of the Members projects in the auction that followed the show, your support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to the Ag society for allowing the use of the grounds, what an amazing facility we have and we greatly appreciated it. The Curling Rink for letting us host the appreciation beef supper after the show and the Town of Swan River for the Picnic tables.

What a great community we live in! Mazer Group & Joe Mangin, C&G Farms, and the Hilmer family for all the equipment to set up & clean up the grounds, we could not have do it with out you!
