“By building state-of-the-art training facilities in schools, young people can learn the skills they need to get good jobs, put down roots and raise their families close to home.” Selinger said.

The announcement took place at the SVRSS Heavy Duty Vocational Training Facility in which the NDP government previously invested $4.8-million. “When you look at this heavy duty mechanic facility, it is the envy of the province.” said Selinger. An additional $1.1 million was also previously spent for two new science classes, and new equipment to help young people go straight into manufacturing and machining careers.

The new trades building will allow students to get a head start in carpentry, electrical and plumbing while they’re still in high school.

The plans for the facility were unveiled during the event.

Bill Schaffer, Chair of the Swan Valley School Board thanked Minister Kostyshyn for being an early advocate and supporter of this project. “Your government’s priority commitment to job skills training is significant to the development of this project for the Valley.” Schaeffer said.

Selinger explained that the investments are part of their commitment to making schools places where there are science labs, skills labs and an opportunity to look at the performing arts as well as get a solid academic education and a start on a post secondary education. He emphasized that the NDP has legislation in place to prevent the closure of small schools with under 100 students which would protect local schools such as Benito, Birch River, Minitonas Early Years and Minitonas Middle Years.

Several highway improvements within the Swan Valley were also highlighted, including:
– $50 million to pave more than 100 kms of Highway 10, including from just north of Garland through Ethelbert and along to the Highway 5 junction; east of Swan River to just south of Highway 20; and Highway 10A in Swan River to PR 488 and south of Mafeking.
– $35 million to pave significant portions of Highway 20, including a new bridge at Fork River, from Cowan to Camperville, and from PR 271 to Camperville.

Finally, a targeted $5-million fund to partner with industry to expand cell and internet broadband coverage to areas without service was announced. The NDP will work with communities, health authorities, school divisions, and service providers to identify areas with the highest needs.
