Swan River resident
Ruby Anne Chartrand was recently honored with the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education.

The award recognizes outstanding early childhood educators for their leadership, exemplary education practices, success in fostering the early development and socialization of the children in their care, and their help in building the foundation children need to meet life’s challenges.

Ms. Chartrand was recognized for her work with the Children of the Future Aboriginal Head Start Program in Swan River for children 3 to 5 years of age. Her Philosophy of Care is described as developing the whole child by focusing on improving their language skills as well as physical and emotional development through creative play and acknowledging their accomplishments. She uses drumming and dance to explore Aboriginal culture for her preschool children. From tying shoes to zipping coats, she builds the confidence of the children in her care, one day at a time.

Ms. Chartrand, along with 17 other national recipients, received her award from the Prime Minister at a special event in Ottawa earlier this month.
