Premier Greg Selinger has announced that the Manitoba government is partnering with municipalities in the Parkland area to invest almost $800,000 in municipal roads, keeping communities linked and ensuring safe and smooth travel for local families, commercial vehicles and tourists.
“This funding will help renew 49 kilometres of municipal roads throughout the Parkland region that have been identified by municipalities as important traffic routes in need of upgrades,” said Premier Selinger. “Manitoba continues make important and unprecedented investments in infrastructure. We want rural communities to benefit from the economic growth and good jobs that come with these projects.”
The upgrades include a total of 6.2 km in the Swan Valley as follows:
RM of Minitonas 1.1 km Road 224N, road renewal;
Town of Minitonas 0.1 km Fourth Avenue, road rehabilitation;
RM of Mountain 4.0 km Road 123W, road rehabilitation; and Road 192N, road renewal
Town of Swan River 0.2 km Third Street N, Spruce Street, road renewal projects and sidewalk rehabilitation;
RM of Swan River 0.8 km Road 224N, road reconstruction; and Road 164W, road renewal;
Developed and delivered in partnership with the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM), these projects are funded through Municipal Road Improvement Program. It will provide a total of $50 million over five years to repair and renew municipal roads across the province.
“The funding being announced today is important because it will not only help tackle the municipal infrastructure deficit, it will have a direct impact on the lives of Parkland citizens,” said Doug Dobrowolski, president, AMM. “The AMM is pleased to be part of the selection process, especially since these dollars are over what municipalities currently receive, allowing municipal governments to plan ahead and begin working on important infrastructure projects right away.”
Twenty-three Manitoba communities identified 37 projects to replace or repair municipal roads. Two projects totaling $150,000 are in the City of Dauphin and one project receiving $79,000 is located in the Rural Municipality of Dauphin.
“Talk of infrastructure dominates the municipal agenda all across Canada but this is a real plan with real dollars that will make a real difference in our communities,” said Eric Irwin, mayor of the City of Dauphin. “We welcome the concrete action taken by the province.”
“Manitoba’s roads and highways are the fundamental social and economic links between families and communities,” said Premier Selinger. “The families that live here, the businesses and services that provide jobs and keep communities viable, and the travellers who keep commerce moving all rely on well maintained roads. An investment in roads is an investment in the economic future of our province.”
Motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution approaching and in construction zones for their own safety and the safety of workers.
