The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Grand Opening of the new Swan Valley Lions Recycling Building at the Swan River Landfill took place Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 2:00 pm.

The Swan Valley Lions started and continue to be the driving force behind the recycling initiative in the Swan Valley. The program currently employs 8 people and has recycled over 2-million pounds of material to date.

Representatives from the Town of Swan River, RM of Swan River, Town of Minitonas and Village of Benito all expressed great appreciation and praise for the ongoing dedication of the Swan Valley Lions to the program.

The previous 3200 square foot recycle building was destroyed by arson almost 2 years ago on August 31, 2011.

The new 5000 sq foot recycle building is owned by the RM of Swan River and Town of Swan River but capital and operating costs will be shared on a per capita basis by the 9 participating user municipalities that include our local G7 municipalities (RM of Minitonas, RM of Mountain, RM of Swan River, Town of Minitonas, Town of Swan River, Village of Benito, Village of Bowsman) as well as the RM of Elthelbert and RM of Mossey River.

The new building cost approximately $700,000. The facility includes many new features such as two deck level loading docks, wash rooms and lunch room as well as larger drop off bins, larger overhead doors and barbed wire security fencing around the entire compound. There is also 3 phase power to the building to operate newer, more efficient compacting and baling equipment.
