Scott Beehler and I (on behalf of the disc golf committee) wanted to thank everyone who came out to the Shaker City Disc Golf Grand Opening.

The event surpassed our expectations.

The opening was on Saturday July 20th. The day started with a short presentation and then the course was open to play. I feel that the town of Benito was well represented. We appreciate that the sponsors, many business owners and town council took time to come and play. Many Benito and valley residents also came and tried the new activity.

We gave away nearly 80 mid-range discs and had many people play the sport for the very first time. There were several competitions through the day. Congratulations to our putting contest winners who each won a long distance driver disc: Patty Hack, Will Moncrief, Wade Hack, and Dean Kalinowsky. We also wanted to thank Curtis Dobbyns for coming out with his family. He won the best round of the day with a score of +29. (Each of the 9 holes are a par 3. If you made par on each hole then a score would be 27).

There were numerous people that contributed to the success of getting the course installed and playable:

Our Gold Sponsors were:
Benito Knights of Columbus
Benito Elks
Benito Drop In Center Inc
Swan River Auto Salvage
Schneiders Insurance

Our Silver Sponsors were:
Scoutens Garage
Scoutens Korner Sweets
Swan Valley Credit Union
Alpine Outfitters

In addition to sponsorships, we received a grant from the MCSC, and the Manitoba Elks. Thank to the Village of Benito for allowing us the use of the property and giving money towards signage. Thank you to Rick Kinaschuk for designing our “rough” spots on the course and for mowing, and Brian Sas and family for donating the 4×4 timbers for tee signs. Karl Johnson designed the logo and course map and Audry Dauk created our tee signs. We also want to thank Valleybiz, the Star and Times, and CJ104 for their promotion and advertizing for us.

We want everyone to know that the course is free to play, any time.
All you have to do is show up with a disc to play.

You can use a regular frisbee or a weighted disc. If you don’t have a disc there are a couple options. The Village of Benito office will have 12 mid-range discs that can be borrowed (so long as arrangements are made during business hours). A deposit of $10 is required. The deposit is returned when the disc is returned.

Discs are available for sale through many online sites or you can call Scott Beehler at 204 539 2957 to purchase. He has a few putters, mid-range and distance discs for sale.

A league night is going to run Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm starting Aug.7th. League night is available for youth, adult and senior players. We hope to have a tournament this fall. Almost all of us playing will be beginners so come a try it.

The course is ready and playable, but there are a few more things to come. Our main welcome sign is still being designed and will have course rules, a map of the course and sponsor info on it. We also hope to get a sign on Hwy 83. At present there is no seating or trash receptacles. We hope to get several benches installed in the next couple months. There is still room to get involved. If you would like to contribute to some of these course upgrades a check can be made out to the Village of Benito designating the funds in the memo line to the Shaker City Disc Golf Course (SCDGC).

Thanks again to everyone that came out and helped make the day a great success. If you are interested in a demonstration on how to play, or if you want more information please call Scott Beehler at 204 539 2957. The Shaker City Disc Golf Course also has a facebook page which will be updated regularly. See you on the course.
