The first farmers’ market of the 2013 season welcomed seven new vendors, four returning vendors and many interesting products.

The market was very well attended and the Swan Valley Interagency had a successful BBQ fundraiser selling hotdogs and smokies with a drink for $5.

They will be holding BBQs at market the following weeks; August 8th and 22nd, September 5th and 19th and October 3rd.

Any community organizations that wish to hold fundraising BBQs this season can contact a board member to book a week. There is no table cost to the community group and only one community group is featured each week.

Some new products this year included ‘gluten aware’ baking, splenda baking, dried beans, herbs, wooden toys, whole grain flour, moccasins and beaded bracelets.

Tomatoes, zucchini, potatoes and beets were the most popular vegetables and many customers purchased pies, buns, doughnuts and tarts for treats last night. There was a wide variety of products and more vendors are expected as the season continues and vegetable crops mature.

Pretty Valley Honey will attend in the next week or two as the bees are still busy and we are expecting a vendor with frozen pickerel fillets from Dawson Bay next week. The Garlic Girl will be returning so watch for fresh and powdered garlic products coming soon.

There are 17 vendors registered for this season already and more products to come. Other products expected this year include fresh fruit, sausage and all the in-season vegetables.

The electrical installation in the Gathering Space building was completed in time for opening market although no musicians took the stage yesterday. The Farmers’ Market Board welcomes any buskers or performers to attend and you can contact a board member to book your week.

The landscaping plans for the Gathering Space are underway and will begin shortly. The market board appreciates your patience as we work through our upgrades which include providing seating and shade for our customers. The board is offering free coffee to customers this year and asking for your input into the market.

Stop by the farmers’ market board table to fill out a survey and enter for a door prize draw to be made October 3rd. The door prize will include various products but you must be present on the draw date to claim your prize.

If you missed the opening market you have 11 more chances to join in the fun.

Markets run every Thursday July 18 to October 3rd from 4:00 to 6:00.

Products vary each week and with 17 vendors to choose from there will be plenty of products.
